More than a dozen Australian clinical medicine researchers have been named among the world’s most influential scientists in the 2025 Highly Cited Researchers list released by Clarivate.

The specialists span fields from cardiology to haematology, representing institutions across Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Australia ranked fifth globally with 312 awards across all disciplines, maintaining its position as a research powerhouse despite a slight decrease in global share.

The Highly Cited Researchers program recognises individuals whose work has demonstrated “broad and significant influence” in their fields, drawing on data from the Web of Science Core Collection.

Bar Veinstein, president of academia & government at Clarivate, said: “We celebrate the Highly Cited Researchers 2025 for advancing innovation and inspiring the global research community to tackle society’s greatest challenges with creativity and ingenuity.”

Among the Australian medical specialists recognised are cardiologists Professor Thomas Marwick from Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Professor Stephen Nicholls from Monash Victorian Heart Institute, and Professor Prashanthan Sanders from The University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital, who specialises in cardiac electrophysiology and atrial fibrillation.

Haematology is represented by Professor John Seymour from The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and Professor Andrew Wei from Alfred Hospital and Monash University, both recognised for work in haematologic malignancies and leukaemia.

Cancer research features prominently with Dr Matteo Carlino from Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre specialising in melanoma and skin cancer, and Professor Sherene Loi from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre working on breast cancer immunotherapy among those named. The late Professor Rinaldo Bellomo, an intensive care researcher from University of Melbourne and Monash University, who died in May this year, was also on the list

The United States dominated the list with 2,670 awards (37% of the global total), while Mainland China held second place with 1,406 awards. Australia (312) ranked fifth.

Globally, 6,868 individuals received 7,131 awards from more than 1,300 institutions in 60 countries. However, 86% of awards were concentrated in just 10 countries, highlighting what Clarivate described as “a remarkable concentration of top global research talent”.

Clarivate said the program had enhanced its screening processes this year, with 432 potential awards excluded due to hyper-prolific publication patterns. The additional scrutiny enabled the reintroduction of the mathematics category.
